Hot one day – cold the next.

While yesterday was sunny and almost too hot for comfort, today is not. It’s just weather, but was still able to alter the mood a bit onboard Coco Mar. After a quiet, overcast morning off Stuart Island, the kids got to work helping me take inventory of our "pantry" items. They had started yesterday, continuing with the lockers behind our salon seats. I also began creating labels for each locker, getting Shane's input as I went. Taking inventory of what we have left. Ideally, I'd like to use my card system to track items, but haven't decided what I w[...]

Avocado Oil is FAKE!? Making pancakes at Stuart Island.

Sunrise cruise from Sucia to Stuart Island. Another early morning departure, leaving Sucia Island for Stuart Island. Work, paddling, fun, exploring a new area, and hiking was the plan once we reached our new destination. Finding out more about our destination. Thanks to careful planning we cruised through the current to our new location. Unfortunately, the weather forecast had changed. We were expecting wind for sailing, but ended up with another morning of calm. Shane was fine with motoring. The batteries needed to be charged after all and we had a sch[...]

Last Day at Sucia Island

Sunday, fun day! We slept in a bit as the sun came over the other side of the land, giving us a little extra shade. There was a nice breeze going. It didn’t take Shane long to jump in the dinghy and go sailing. After spending what felt like most of my day in the galley on Saturday, I had vowed to not make any meals on Sunday. Spoiler alert, my cooking and dish washing ended up to be pretty minimal! I’ll show how I did it in a bit. Wyatt being funny getting ready to paint. To begin with, Wyatt and I spent our morning getting crafty in preparation for[...]

Saturdays are for Organizing

We’re not on vacation. This is our normal life, but on a boat, in new locations. I love having rhythm in our days, weeks, and seasons. Saturdays are a good day for getting things ready for the week ahead. Sundays are for resting, being with family, and reflection. Grammy and Grampy left after breakfast. We had so much fun having another boat to chat and explore with. Shane went out sailing in the morning on the PT Eleven. The wind was blowing through Fox Cove, so he was having a blast. After breakfast Wyatt joined him. Wyatt is becoming a strong waterman, ta[...]

A normal Friday, but make it extra!

With our 4:30am departure time, Shane saw a couple of the planets lined up next to the moon. If you woke up early enough you could see five planets lined up with the moon. How cool! By the time I got outside only one planet was still lit up. Nevertheless, a beautiful sight. Early morning moon off our port side. The gorgeous sunrise kept getting better as we went on. There was no wind and the water was as smooth as glass in parts. Shane had planned our departure in mind of our schedule and also with the currents. We were cruising along at 8.5 knots, even aft[...]

The Bellingham Dash and How We Get Mail While Cruising

We had a day to get it all done! Showers, mail, picking up some odds and ends, groceries, and preparing the boat. I’m writing this the next morning, trying to fend off distraction. We left the dock at 5am today and it is just beautiful out! Gorgeous. We were trying to leave last night and now I’m grateful we didn’t. The morning was spent doing some math and planning out what we needed to get while in town. Bellingham is where our mail is being sent and I had recently had a few packages sent there from Amazon. I’ll have to do some posts on some i[...]

Keeping a Log while Offline

I wrote my travel log for Tuesday and it disappeared within minutes of leaving my computer. Why?! “Being out” on the boat, in terms of away from a power source and reliable service, has a learning curve attached to it. And, the most effective way to grow in my understanding is through trial and error. Get caught up on my Travel Logs here. I also am editing videos of our experience on the boat on YouTube here. During the day we have our system pretty well flushed out for work and homeschooling. However, at night we turn off the inverter and at times are[...]

Sucia Island Day II

Shane circumnavigated his remaining islands around Sucia Island on the paddleboard. He has a goal of paddling all named rocks and Islands of the Puget Sound. There are over 300. He’s put a pretty good dent on that over the past couple of years. It definitely helps to be a swim platform away from the area you’d like to paddle! He was back before 9am. During that time I was able to get a barre workout in. Without the inverter on, my connection to the outside world is not great out here (until later when we hiked). Thankfully, the barre service I subscribe to[...]

Happy Father’s Day from Sucia Island

Shane woke up early to go around a few islands before we pulled anchor for Sucia Island. Our coffee guest! A beautiful eagle encounter before breakfast. While he was paddling the boys and I had the most amazing eagle encounter! Out of the corner of my eye it looked like something big had fallen from the sky. When I darted my eyes over I saw it was an eagle, sitting ready for takeoff after noticing our excitement in seeing it. I yelled for the boys to come see and we had fun watching it for the twenty or so seconds it was with us. Monkeybread breakfast![...]

Island Hopping: San Juan Island – Jones Island – Waldron Island

Hippity hoppity Coco Mar is on her way! We sailed from San Juan Island to Jones Island early in the morning. Well, almost all the way. We eventually made it there. The kids and I had just watched a video of ours when we met Grammy and Grampy at Jones Island the night before. They were eight and four at the time of the video. https://youtu.be/D2LI6Y7yw_g Once at Jones Island we anchored in about 40 feet of water off of the rocks. The anchor held quickly and we were able to enjoy our lunch of rice and beans with romaine and avocado. I make the boys rice[...]
