The boys have loved music by Imagine Dragons over the years. One of their songs they like to listen to in the car is Thunder. It’s from 2017 and hasn’t gotten old yet.
There’s a line in it that goes…
“I was lightning before the thunder.”
This morning Shane and I awoke abruptly to the sounds of lighting and thunder overhead. Never a great sound when you’re on a sailboat. It passed shortly and we eventually got back into bed.
It had been raining for a bit when Shane went out to lower the dinghy not long after the lightning. Before heading out he grabbed his bibs and raincoat. It wouldn’t be the last time the rain gear came out.
The morning was a slow one with pancakes for the boys and black coffee for us. We watched boats come and go and ran the engine to charge our batteries. Everything got plugged in that needed it. Shane commented that he was surprised to hear a number of boats in the harbor running their generators throughout the day.
For lunch I made Shane and I salads with sardines, a few veggies I had on hand, sprouts, hemp seeds, and sriracha for Shane and wasabi for me. I am really loving wasabi in chopped salads lately. Shane does not love it, but he does like sriracha.
After lunch Shane got the dinghy ready to row to shore. He needed the activity and also wanted some snacks.
I worked on my food inventory spreadsheet while he was gone. I had one I used in the house that I’m updating for the boat and our new preferences. It makes grocery shopping easier while ensuring I have the staples necessary to make a variety of meals.
Later the boys suited up and went out with Shane on the dinghy, this time practicing with the motor. They putted around the harbor and never complained about being in the rain or having to wear their neon gear.
We noticed how most boaters went to shore with sweats on and no type of rain gear. I felt bad for the pet owners who had to bring wet dogs back and forth throughout the day.
For dinner Shane put on Avengers End Game for me. It’s a favorite of mine and with Thor Love and Thunder coming out this week, I felt like we should revisit what was up with Thor last. I used a dried sweet potato soup mix for dinner. I added some farro and additional yams and broth to it to make it more robust. Shane bought me an avocado from town to add in too.
How much was the avocado? He told me later it was $6! Crazy! To make me feel better he said it was the best avocado he’s had.
For years I’ve dreamt about being out on our own boat with my family. It was a vision I held onto. Like in the song, everything leading up to today was the lightning and now I’m grateful to be feeling the thunder.
